The BlackOvis Anchor Point 800 Fill Welded Down Jacket is one of those essential pieces of gear that should always find a place in your pack, no matter the season or location. Not only does it pack down to the size of a Nalgene bottle, weighing in at just 12.7 ounces, but it provides the warmth and durability needed to withstand cold temperatures. This jacket isn’t just another puffy—it’s a backcountry tool that has saved me more than once when temperatures plummeted. Having a dependable puffy like the Anchor Point can make all the difference.

Whether you’re hunting mule deer in Mexico or chasing bears in high elevation, the Anchor Point jacket needs to be a permanent addition to your pack. Here’s why:

Lightweight, Packable, and Ready for Anything
What sets the Anchor Point 800 Fill Welded Down Jacket apart from other puffy jackets on the market is its competitive price point. Coming in at at killer price point, it blows other puffy jackets out of the water. It’s not just designed for those chilly mornings glassing for a mature buck or evenings back at camp. This jacket excels in beating out competitors in price but also on the mountain!

On a late fall mule deer hunt in Colorado, I woke up to freezing temperatures. The wind was howling across the ridges as we climbed to our glassing spot. I was cold, but I had the Anchor Point in my pack, and within minutes of putting it on, I could feel my body temperature stabilize. The jacket’s 800-fill down insulation traps heat efficiently without adding bulk, allowing me to move freely and stay comfortable for hours. And because it packs down so small, it hardly took up any space in my pack— essential when you’re already loaded down with optics and a rifle.

Designed for the Backcountry Hunter
There are few pieces of gear that perform across a wide range of conditions and activities as well as the Anchor Point jacket. It's truly designed with the backcountry hunter in mind, making it an essential for those pursuing game in all corners of the world.

I’ve worn this jacket while hunting everything from elk in the Rockies, to bears in Idaho, and whitetails in Wyoming. Its 800-fill down insulation is incredibly efficient keeping you warm without the weight.

When the mornings are cold and the afternoons warm up as you trek up and down ridges, having a jacket that is easy to stow and then quickly deploy when glassing or sitting is critical. The Anchor Point jacket has always been up to the challenge.

Mexico Mule Deer Hunt: From Sunrise to Sunset - Not The Backcountry!
One of the most challenging hunts I've experienced was this past winter for mule deer in the Sonoran desert of Mexico. If you've ever hunted there, you know the drastic shifts in temperature from sunrise to midday can be intense. During the early mornings, the cold air cuts through your clothes while in the high rack, and then the sun heats up the landscape quickly by mid-morning.

At sunrise, temperatures are usually in the low 30's in January so I had the jacket on first thing. By midday, it was stuffed into my pack. I didn’t even notice it was there until the evening, when the sun was setting and the temperatures dropped again.

While this is not a physically demanding hunt, it can be a mental battle. With seeing zero bucks the first 3 days, it is hard to keep morale high. The Anchor Point allowed me to end up being successful so I could concentrate looking for deer, not being cold!

Nylon Exterior Fabric
Hunting in the backcountry isn’t just about staying warm, though—that’s only part of the equation. You need gear that can take a beating and still perform. The Anchor Point has been through thick and thin with me. From scrambling over rocky outcroppings in Montana this jacket has held up great while previous puffy jackets I have owned tear on the first encounter with a twig or sagebrush.

A lot of down jackets on the market are fragile, prone to tears or losing feathers. Not the Anchor Point. Its welded construction increases durability, meaning you don’t have to baby this jacket, even in the toughest conditions. You can focus on the hunt, not on whether your gear is going to survive the journey.

Not Just For Hunting
While the Anchor Point jacket is tailor-made for the backcountry hunter, it’s also perfect for anyone who spends time outdoors. I’ve taken this jacket with me fly fishing, hiking, and even for casual camping trips. It’s just as at home around a campfire as it is on a ridge glassing for game.

Outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality, versatile gear will love the Anchor Point. Whether you’re an angler looking for a lightweight jacket to keep you warm on those early morning casts or someone who needs something that packs down small but delivers warmth when you reach higher elevations, this jacket checks all the boxes. Its down insulation packs a punch, providing incredible warmth while remaining lightweight and compressible.

Conclusion: The Must-Have Piece for Every Pack
No matter what you're hunting—elk, mule deer, bear, or whitetail—the Anchor Point 800 Fill Welded Down Jacket is an essential piece of gear that belongs in every hunter's pack. It’s lightweight, packable, and incredibly warm, without sacrificing durability. For me, it's a no-brainer to take along on every adventure.
